Homeschool Field Trip Ideas!
I've provided some homeschool field trip ideas specific to the Madison, Wisconsin area, however you should be able to find similar places in your area as well! I usually plan to do at least one trip a month with my girls. They are about 5 years apart in age so finding some ideas for homeschool fieldtrips can be tricky. Here are a few that we've enjoyed in the past.
Visit a State Capitol Building: A visit to the Wisconsin State Capitol is a great way to learn about the state's government and history. The building features beautiful architecture and artwork, as well as informative exhibits. You can also visit your local state capital build. This is a great day trip for students learning about our U.S. government or the basic structure of state and local government.
Visit a Botanical Garden: The Olbrich Botanical Gardens are a beautiful place to explore and learn about plants and nature. The gardens feature a wide variety of plant species, as well as educational exhibits and workshops. You most likely live near a nature reserve, wildlife marsh or other type of outdoor reserve. This is great to help children learn about conservation and the importance of protecting certain species of plants and animal habitats.
Visit a Children's Museum: The Madison Children's Museum offers a variety of hands-on exhibits and programs for children of all ages. The museum focuses on art, science, and culture, and is a great place for children to learn and explore. I'm sure you can find a hands-on type of museum close to you as well! This is a great day trip for younger children!
Visit a Historical Museum or Site: The Wisconsin Historical Museum is a great place to learn about the state's rich history. The museum features exhibits on Native American culture, Wisconsin's role in the Civil War, and other important events in the state's past. There are always cool places like this to visit around the US! Old World Wisconsin is another really cool option.
Visit a Zoo: The Henry Vilas Zoo is a free zoo located in Madison. The zoo features a wide variety of animals from around the world, as well as educational exhibits and programs. The Milwaukee Zoo or The Shedd Aquarium in Chicago are also great options.
Visit a Science Museum: The Wisconsin Science Museum is a hands-on science museum that offers a wide variety of exhibits and programs. The museum focuses on science, technology, engineering, and math, and is a great place for students to learn and explore. There are many cool museums to visit like this, I'm sure there's one by you.
Visit a local University: The University of Wisconsin-Madison is a great place for older students to explore and learn. The university offers a wide variety of programs and exhibits, including art galleries, museums, and scientific research facilities. This would be a fun trip for older students who maybe considering a four-year college. It gives them the opportunity to see the campus!
